What is what does it mean when your check engine light flashes?

A flashing check engine light is a serious warning that indicates a severe engine problem, most commonly a misfire. This means one or more of your engine's cylinders isn't firing properly. When unburnt fuel enters the exhaust system, it can quickly overheat and damage the catalytic converter.

What to do:

  • Stop Driving (If Safe): If the light starts flashing, pull over to a safe location as soon as possible. Continuing to drive can cause further damage.
  • Avoid High Speeds/Heavy Loads: If you must drive to a repair shop, do so at a low speed and avoid putting extra strain on the engine.
  • Get it Checked Immediately: A flashing check engine light requires immediate attention. Take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible for diagnosis and repair. Delaying repair can lead to very expensive repairs, especially to the catalytic converter.
